The Clinton presidency and the 1990s are now remembered as the apotheosis of neoliberalism. In his new book, A Fabulous Failure: The Clinton Presidency and the Transformation of American Capitalism, Nelson Lichtenstein provides an in depth investigation of how this era earned its reputation. He shows how the original, expansive ambitions of the Clinton Administration were curtailed and ultimately failed. Lichtenstein explores how changes in the economy and global order pushed Clinton and his allies towards neoliberalism over the course of his eight years in office, and the effects of this ideological movement.
On January 23, 2024, the Roosevelt Institute hosted a virtual roundtable discussion with Nelson Lichtenstien, moderated by Roosevelt’s Deputy Director of Corporate Power Emily DiVito.
